Gilit,
The claim that the state of Israel is a democracy is questioned, these days more then ever. Many before me have pointed to the very basic notions of racism and separatism that are a part of the Zionist movement, and as a direct result, part of Israel itself. Israel is an "if Democracy". "If" you are Jewish, "If" you are Zionist, "If" you belong to the economical and military elite, "If" you live in certain privileged places, and so on, then you are entitled to some sort of democracy; If not, then you are in trouble. You must fight in order for your voice to be heard, for your rights (even if you are entitled to them by law, but not always) to be protected, and for your ability to make a meaningful difference. There are more and more examples to this with every passing day. Look in the newspapers, and you could easily see them. I have saw at least a dozen cases of severe human and civil rights violation, just in the couple of days before my flight. I am not looking for the ideal place to live in. I don't think that such a place exists - everyone and everywhere has some shadows lurking in the closet. I'm looking at what was my home, and trying to figure out if it can still be that. I'm looking at Israel because it is (and will remain that way, if I want it or not) a part of me, and I am a part of it. You say "He who stays, influences". That is a somewhat naive statement, and should be coupled with "He who stays, must burden the moral responsibility". It is a naive statement because in the globalized world of communication and information - one need not be within a place in order to greatly influence it. What is important are the Sources of Power, and the way that world-wide public opinion is influenced in order to press these Sources of Power into action. For example - I can try and influence soldiers standing in the blockades on Palestinian land to act like human-beings, or I can try to help change the world-wide opinion regarding their very present on this land. A change in that opinion will have long-term consequences, and a wider influence. I'm not disrespecting the fine job done by those who work on the local level, they have a tremendous influence on the ability to minimize and expose the atrocities being done, but I do think that in order to stop those atrocities completely, a wider audience and perspective are required. It is an incomplete statement, because the ability to truly influence is given mostly to those who fall within the "If" questions I displayed above, while the moral responsibility is of all who take part, even if just by paying taxes, in the country. This also has to do with the first response to your reply. "Non-Ideology" does not equal "Zero-Influence", in fact, it equals "Passive Support for Current Powers", and as such, has a moral responsibility. That is the basic flaw in the Escapist will to cut yourself from all that surrounds you, and to have no influence on it. I´m not sure this is very coherent, but it´s the best I can do under the circumstances. I hope to have a way to write in Hebrew in the near future, and then it will be much easier. |
