As a geek who has been beaten up profusely as a boy, I found the solution to be equivalent to the following policy:

1. Constantly negotiate with the enemy.

2. Respond in senseless acts of violence on completely random occasions of provocation, while being completely congenial in response to other occasions of provocation.

That kind of policy got me through Junior High and High School.
