According to my unqualified opinion, there are 3 groups among todays programmers:

1) Those who just want a good proffession, in the past they may have studied Medicine or Law

2) Those who like logic and abstractness - in the past they were Mathematicians

3) Those who like systems and structure - in the past they were engineers
